Mathews Monster MR8

    Mathews MR8 Review

McPherson or Monster or MR8, The Mathews MR8 is not short on names or weight. The 4.45 naked weight is the first con for this Mathews MR8 review. It tips the scales about a half pound heavier than most other bows. It is actually 1 pound heavier than Mathews Heli M. But some shooters preferred the heavier bow because it was more stable at full bow.

The MR8 does have some great qualities if you overlook the weight. The 8inch brace height is a nice addition. The brace height is the distance from the grip to the string. The longer the brace height provides a more forgiving bow because the arrow spends less time nocked to the string. In comparison the Heli M and Z series bows all have 7 inch brace heights.

    Mathews MR8 Draw Cycle

This is a dual cam bow but the draw cycle is relatively smooth. All of our research shows shooters are very pleased with the smooth draw. Many people have compared it as being similar to a Strother or Elite bow draw. Hunters will love the draw and find it manageable even in those odd positions bow hunters find ourselves in.

    Mathews MR8 Speed

Like we mentioned earlier the Mathews MR8 has an 8 inch brace height. This feature adds to the forgiving nature of the bow and leads to better accuracy. The trade off for the extra brace height is slower IBO speeds. IBO for the MR8 is listed at 330fps. This doesn't seem like much for a 2 cam bow but remember the brace height is much higher than that of the PSE Omen.

Overall the 2012 Mathews MR8 is a smooth drawing and accurate bow. If you are willing to trade in blazing speed for brace height then this might be for you. The weight could be an issue so we suggest you visit a low pro shop and take the Mathews MR8 for a test drive.

I am a big guy and only had a few bows to choose from (draw length is 32 inches) so I picked the mr8 up and I love it! For a first time bow owner and shooter it has not taken me long to get nice “kill shot” groups at 30-40 yards with this bow.
